Catching Butterflies

This week, I’m focusing on Sale-a-bration products, giving you one more peek at some of the things you can earn for free with a qualifying purchase. Sale-a-bration ends next Monday, Feb. 28, so you have just a few more days to take advantage of this special promotion. Today I’m featuring the sweet stamp set called Catching Butterflies. It is free with a $50 purchase from either of the two current catalogs or the Clearance Rack.

Here’s a one-layer card on which I have a few different techniques to share with you. The first one is stenciling. Did you see CASEing Coast to Coast last week? If not, see it HERE. Rosanne and I used stenciling on our cards. Since then, I have received the decorative masks pack from the Spring Mini Catalog called Butterflies & Flowers. And I used one of the masks on this card.

Here’s How:
  • Cut a piece of Basic White Cardstock to 5-1/2″x 4-1/4″. Lay it on an art board or mat with bits of tape to hold it in place while you brush on your color.
  • Lay the stencil/mask over the cardstock and hold it in place with tape or magnets if your board is metal.
  • Create a solid oval mask with a die and some paper. Masking Paper works well, as do Window Sheets. Alternatively, you can trace an oval shape onto some paper and hand-cut it out. Place your oval mask in the middle over the floral stencil/mask and secure it down to keep from wiggling.
  • With a Blending Brush, start applying ink (Petal Pink in this card) in a circular motion until all of the area you want covered is inked.
  • Remove the mask and the stencil and trim the piece down to 5-1/4″x 4″.

Another technique I used is paper piecing on the girl’s dress.

Here’s How:

After stamping the image onto the stenciled panel with black ink, stamp the dress a second time onto patterned paper with black ink. I used Hand-Penned DSP with the pink and yellow flowers. Hand cut the dress out of the floral paper and glue it over the original image on the panel.

Color the image with Blends, colored pencils, or ink with a Blender Pen. I chose to use Blends on this card. I may have liked the softer look of the Watercolor Pencils and I might try that next time. However, I used the new brown-toned Blends for her hair and I do like the way that turned out! Here is the stamp set ~

I added Wink of Stella on the butterfly net, and glued the whole panel on a base of Flirty Flamingo Cardstock, 8-1/2″x 5-1/2″, scored at 4-1/4″.

She is very cute. I love the fact that she’s barefoot, running through the grass! Get one of these adorable stamp sets free during Sale-a-bration.

  1. This is such a sweet card, Karen. With all the different techniques you included, it hardly seems like a one layer card. Great job!
