One of the questions I get asked frequently is, “Where do you get your ideas?” It’s not a simple answer, as often the design idea just develops as I start working on it. But one thing that I use to get started when I’m needing that little creative nudge is a card sketch for inspiration. There are lots of them online! Just google “card sketches” and you’ll see what I mean. This card today started with a sketch that I saw on Freshly Made Sketches. Unfortunately I was too late to enter into the challenge, but I thought I’d share it with you all the same!
Here is the FMS sketch that got me started:
This card is really about the designer series paper! I picked one of the sheets from See A Silhouette that I hadn’t used yet, and started building from there.
See A Silhouette Designer Series Paper, #149443, $11.50
Steps With Tips
- My base card is Thick Whisper White (I always use the thick WW for nice, sturdy bases).
- Then I layered Poppy Parade Cardstock under the DSP.
- Next I added a wrap of Daffodil Delight 1/4″ Ruched Ribbon and tied a simple knot.
- For the diamond shape, I cut the largest of the Stitched Shapes squares from Whisper White Cardstock and turned it 45 degrees.
- Before gluing it to a layer of Poppy Parade, I ran it through the Big Shot with a die from Tasteful Backgrounds. This die only cuts a pattern out of the middle of your paper. To see a card I made using another of these dies, click here.
- At this point, you can do one of two things: 1) cut a square of the DSP and glue it behind the cut-out white square, or 2) cut a piece of DSP with the same Tasteful Backgrounds die and glue each flower petal into the holes of the white square. I did #2! It was actually kind of fun, like putting a puzzle together without the stress of fitting the correct pieces! It took me 10 minutes tops.
- The sentiment I chose comes from Itty Bitty Greetings and I stamped Early Espresso onto Daffodil Delight, then cut it with the smallest of the Stitched Nested Labels Dies.
I made mine a top-folding card, but the design works just as well with a side fold.
This is my week to take out products I haven’t used in awhile and enjoy them again! I love, love, love this See A Silhouette Designer Series Paper. It is intimidating at first with its big, bold, colorful prints – but all the more “Wow!” when you finish it. I hope we’ll see more like this in the new catalog, coming out in June (yay!)
