CASEing Coast to Coast with Ombre

It’s time for CASEing Coast to Coast! Once a month Rosanne Mulhern and I take turns CASEing (Copy And Selectively Edit) each other’s cards. We call it Coast to Coast because I live on the Pacific Coast and she is on the Atlantic Coast. We’ve started adding a theme to our CC2C posts and this month the theme is ombré. You’ll see my card first this month, then we’ll click over to Rosanne’s.

It’s Maxwell’s birthday, and we’re going to have a whale of a time! I made him this oversized (6″x 6″) card with an under-the-sea theme. I think he’ll love the bale of sea turtles swimming by to wish him a happy birthday!

For the front of the card, I started with the ombré wave paper found in Whale of a Time DSP. I hand snipped the paper with the ocean bottom on it and glued it to the bottom of the 6″x 6″ wave paper. Then I hand-cut the turtles out and glued them to the front, popping the one in the middle up with Dimensionals. I also hand-snipped a tiny crab from the DSP and adhered it to the bottom with a Mini Dimensional.

“Time to Celebrate!” comes from Itty Bitty Birthdays (retiring May 3 along with Whale of a Time DSP). I cropped it out with Stitched So Sweetly Dies.

On the inside, I cut white cardstock to 5-3/4″x 5-3/4″, used some Sand & Sea DSP for the ocean floor, and added his name, cut with Playful Alphabet Dies and Calypso Coral Cardstock. The inside greetings are from A Grand Kid, and the sea creatures are again from Whale of a Time DSP. I might add one more tiny crab to the sand at the bottom!

Adjusting for the Size

Because of the size, I had to get creative with a card base. If you own 12″x 12″ cardstock, you’re in good shape, but I don’t. So I cut a piece of Tranquil Tide Cardstock to 6-1/2″x 6″ and scored it at the 6″ point to give me a 1/2″ flap to adhere my DSP card front to. You can see in the next photo how that worked.

It worked well! The back of the wave DSP is tiny seahorses, which decorates the inside, and the weight is strong enough to hold together. Ta-dah! (hint: use extra strong adhesive on that 1/2″ flap to secure the DSP.)

Specialty Envelope

An odd-sized card needs a specialty envelope. I don’t know if you can buy a 6″x 6″ envelope, but you can make one! I’ve used my Envelope Punchboard (remember that handy tool? I never understood why they stopped selling it!), some paper cut to 9-1/2″x 9-1/2″, and “Seal +” Adhesive.

Did you know that…  ?

Multipurpose Liquid Glue acts as a temporary adhesive if you let it dry before putting it on your project. I put a few lines of glue on the back of the whale cutout for the envelope, let it dry, and it became a removable sticker that holds the envelope flap closed until you want to open it. No tearing necessary!

I hope you found this card to be as fun as it was to make! And now I know you’re wondering…what did Rosanne make??? I’m wondering too. Let’s click over to her blog and travel to Pennsylvania to take a look. Click HERE.

    • Thanks, Dianne! It’s one of those tips that get forgotten. I’ve known about the duel use of Multipurpose Liquid Glue for a long time, but forgot to ever use that way! It’s perfect for this purpose.

  5. Hi Karen, I loved this whole card, envelope, glue tip and instructions.
    Happy Birthday Max.
    Have a blessed day.
