Camp Create, Day 3: Emboss Resist

It’s Day 3 of MFT Camp Create! I’m loving summer camp this year and will definitely want to come back next year! Actually, it’s all online and everyone is welcome to join. You should try it! This camp is my kind of fun!

That being said, I think today’s challenge is my biggest hurdle yet. We were challenged to make a card using the emboss resist technique. The camp counselor on You Tube made it look so easy! But I admit to struggling a bit with it. Here’s the card I made ~

To make my leaves, I followed the counselor’s suggestion and used White Pigment Ink on Basic White Cardstock, followed with white embossing powder. The leaf stamps are from Stampin’ Up!’s new set called Time of Giving. There is a coordinating die, so they were easy to cut out.

Hurdles to Overcome
  • White embossing on white cardstock is not easy to see. When I tried to line up the dies to cut them out, forget about it!

My solution was to sponge a little color on each leaf. I used the Regals Collection of colors. That made the die-cutting much easier! Once they were cut out, I went back over each leaf with more intense color. I purposely left the color uneven, which happens in nature, right? It’s also easier not to worry about perfection 😉  After the color was on, I wiped each leaf with a dry rag to rub the ink off the embossed parts. That’s when the color popped and the white really stood out.

  • Toning down the background so the leaves would be prominent!

My solution was to cover it with Vellum. It softened the intense color of the Beauty of the Earth DSP, which has all of the rich deep colors from the Regals Collection. In order to hold the Vellum in place without glue showing through, I attached it on the side of the card with a folded 1″ strip of Shimmery White Cardstock. I nestled the DSP and Vellum together into the fold and glued both sides to the strip with Tear & Tape.

Finishing It Off

My sentiment is from Quiet Meadow. I stamped it with Blackberry Bliss to match the card base onto Shimmery White Cardstock. Then I punched it out using the Label Me Lovely Punch. To “beef up” the sentiment stamp a little, I re-stamped it with Versamark and heat embossed it with Clear Emboss Powder.

Three Wonderful Gems (love that little sparkle of gold!) finish it off.

I hope you like my card project for today and found my directions helpful. This is a technique that could use some practice! I enjoyed the process, though, and recommend trying it!

That’s it for Day 3! See you soon with Day 4’s project ~

  1. Karen, I’m really enjoying going to camp with you vicariously. Your projects are outstanding.

  2. Hi can I ask you do you know if your stamping up dies work in Ana Griffin die cutting machine Mini Empress?. I know stampin up uses the big shot right.
    Thanks

    • Lynne, thanks for asking. I don’t know of anyone who has the machine you mentioned, so I honestly can’t say. Stampin’ Up! used to sell the Sizzix Big Shot and that is what I still use for my larger projects. They now carry a new set of machines that are similar to the Big Shot, called the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machines and the mini version that looks similar in size to the Ana Griffin one. If you’d like an inexpensive used die to try it out, I have a retired “Thank You” die you can buy for $10. Let me know!
