Stenciling is a good alternative!

While having a little texting chat with Rosanne, she reminded me that stenciling is a good alternative to DSP if you don’t have quite the right paper for a project. I was finding it difficult to match the Orchid Oasis flowers with the DSP I had on hand, so I brought out the Blending Brushes and stencils and got to work! Within minutes, I had a background that perfectly matches (because it’s the same ink pad!) my flowers. And that put a smile on my face! Thanks, Rosanne!

The stencil I used is from Honey Bee Stamps and it’s called Basketweave. My stamps are from a Sale-a-bration item, Wonderful World. I cropped my image and its layer with Deckled Rectangle Dies. My bow is the Old Olive Twill and I cut it in half lengthwise to get a more narrow bow.

I stamped a second set of flowers and hand-cut them out. Then I lifted them up over the original stamped image with Dimensionals for a fuller-looking bloom. I added some 2022-24 In Color Matte Decorative Dots to the center of the large bloom to give it a little bit more “je ne sais quoi.”

I purposefully left off a greeting. Not sure for what or to whom this card will go, so I’ll add it when I know. It may just be on the inside. We’ll see!

I couldn’t find any stencils from Stampin’ Up! that are current. Let me know if you know of some that I’ve missed. Another fun idea is to create your own stencils from dies and lightweight paper. Give one of these ideas a try and let me know how it turned out!

Have fun in your crafting space!

  1. Love that card!!

  2. Chris from Pella

Beautiful! I like stencils but rarely use them. Not sure why, as this is lovely.

  3. What a lovely card, Karen! The stenciled background is just perfect. I’m not sure any DSP would have been better! Now I should take my own advice and play with some stencils.

    • Thanks, Rosanne! It was fun, easy, and quick for some great results. I’ll have to remember to do this more often.
