MIX IT UP! Today I have a card with a little bit of this, and a little bit of that! It all started with a request for a tiny 3-1/2″x 2-1/2″ trading card. I picked Daffodil Delight and Birthday Bonanza DSP and it took off from there!
I stamped the birthday sentiment from Peaceful Moments onto Whisper White, then cropped it out with Stitched So Sweetly Dies. Then I layered that with Bermuda Bay and flanked the two corners with tiny butterflies from Butterfly Beauty Dies. Mixed up? Yeah! There’s more…
Embossed with the long-ago retired Large Polka-Dot Die (going for the circles to match the balloons!), I wrapped the outer layer with black twine from the Country Club Suite.
On the inside, I stamped another great birthday sentiment from Peaceful Moments and added two more butterflies. This card has taken on a Dr. Seuss quality with all the different suite elements! It does make for a bright and cheerful birthday card. Mix it up!
Design Tips (or at least my opinion, for what it’s worth!)
When designing a card front, it’s best not to get it too cluttered. For example, on this card, I tried putting coordinating DSP around the outside, but it assaulted my eyes! The bit of balloon paper is busy enough, so the surrounding area really needed to be more neutral. I thought the plain cardstock was too blah, so I added the texture with an embossing folder and that option let my eyes rest on the focal point – the balloon panel – without being too busy. Does that make sense?
I also like to “match” design elements, so I went with the large circles to go with the shapes of the balloons. And then I tied the twine in a manner that “matched” the balloon strings.
