Joy of Christmas (and a give-away!)

Merry Monday! Today’s card is for the traditionalists among you. Beautiful greens, Cherry Cobbler red, and Christmas greenery bring out the Joy of Christmas! Which, just happens to be the name of this new Designer Series Paper. It will be available to purchase this Wednesday, Sept. 6. If you purchased one of my Product Shares, a sampling of it will be coming to your mailbox soon!

I want to give a shout out to Mary Fish for this basic design. Thank you, Mary! I love the Countryside Corners Dies stacked and off-center in this card. For my sentiment, I pulled out Brightest Glow and stamped it in Shaded Spruce.

Step-by-Step
  • Start with a 8-1/2″x 5-1/2″ piece of Shaded Spruce. Fold it at 4-1/4″ for the card base.
  • Cut another piece of Shaded Spruce to 5-1/4″x 4″ and add texture with the Timber Embossing Folder.
  • To the textured piece, glue a 3-1/2″x 3″ piece of Joy of Christmas DSP, cropped with the 2nd largest Countryside Corners Dies. Match the right sides together.
  • The next layer is also from Joy of Christmas. Crop it with the Countryside Corners Die that is 1-3/4″ wide. Before you glue this red layer down, choose some red and green foliage to glue under the top left corner, then glue it down.
  • The last layer is Basic White. It is the 1-1/4″ wide die from the set. I adhered this layer with Dimensionals.
  • Add a twine bow and a sequin to finish it off.
  • To make it even more special for the recipient, add a 2″x 6″ piece of matching DSP to the envelope flap. You may want to add a 1/4″ strip of Shaded Spruce to further tie it to the card. (If you don’t use the strip, cut the DSP to 2-1/4″x 6″, glue it to the flap and trim off the excess.)

I had to take a deep dive in my craft space to embellish this card! I don’t yet own the bundles that go with this paper, so I scrounged up foliage pieces from past year’s sets. The greenery is from Christmas Banner Dies (available on the Clearance Rack for $19.75!) and the berries are from Poinsettia Dies. Dig into your stash and see what gems you have that could be used again! Or consider buying the Joy of Noel Bundle and/or the Christmas Classics Bundle – both gorgeous sets that come out on Sept. 6.

I also found some old Cherry Cobbler Baker’s Twine. It would be awesome if colored Baker’s Twine would make a comeback! I love it! As an alternative, color white twine with a Cherry Cobbler Blend Marker.

POLL QUESTION (with a chance to win!):
  • Do you love the traditional red/green combinations for Christmas? -or-
  • Do you prefer untraditional colors for holiday cards?

Let me know in the comments below! I’ll enter your name into a random drawing. Winner gets a free card kit from me! Note: I can only ship to the United States. The deadline to enter the give-away is Friday, Sept. 8.

  1. I love the blues & silvers with lovely snowflakes the most but do make traditional red & green also. I do love the gorgeous plaids in those colors!

  2. I am traditional all the way but can be persuaded with blues and silver and also all white!

  3. This is one of my favorites. Pretty much traditional…depending on the card/ theme, I can be swayed.

  4. I think I’m all over the board, Karen! Love green and red (any shades), but if it’s a snowman or snowflake card, it has to be blues and silver. I’m also partial to rustic cards made with soft suede (oh, how I miss it!) or crumb cake, mossy meadow and a touch of red. Of course, they all have to be glitzed up, ya know!

  5. I’m traditional with different shades of greens and reds.

  6. I am solidly in the traditional camp, but like so many other commentators, for me, that includes blues and silvers. (And of course, gold with those reds and greens!)

  7. I am an old fashion girl and enjoy the Red and green, These colors just reminds me of the Christmas colors growing up.
I do tend to make some cards with gold accents.

  8. I truly have been a traditional color person but did find the pink colors rather beautiful. Haven’t gotten to like the vivid off colors of late. The oranges, yellows and black are better for Halloween cards. Who needs to be reminded of Halloween for Christ’s birthday and celebration? Not me, thank you!

  9. I’m like the green and red best, but love the blues, silver and gold. I enjoy your inspiration!

  10. I love the traditional colors. Red and green are it. Thanks for all your great design ideas.

  11. I normally love the red and green, but am also liking the blue in the bear set this year.

  12. I love the traditional red and green colors, although Night of Navy seems to make an appearance on a lot of my Christmas cards. Love your card and I agree with you, wish they would bring out colored Baker’s Twine and would love to see a deep, regal purple again.

  13. I love the Traditional Red and Greens but also love untraditional colors as well.

  14. Red and green are Christmas. But I like blue and silver, too.

  15. I am drawn to snowmen cards so I prefer the blue and white combination. If I were to make this style card, I would definitely lean to the green and red combo.

  16. I like the traditional colors but as I think back of my designs from over the years, I lean more towards the untraditional colors/designs.

  17. Red and green, period.

  18. I tend to use the traditional colors but will occasionally use the non traditional.

  19. Gorgeous card! I love red and green. But, with snow cards I love blue and silver. Sometimes burgundy and navy will appeal to me. Rarely will you find me with a neon green, turquoise and pink theme. Rich cherry cobbler and a dark green are my favorites. I wish Hunter green would make an appearance again.

  20. Although the traditional Red and Green are generally popular, I enjoy to shake things up a bit with NON-Traditional colors.

  21. By far the majority of Christmas cards I make are the red/green combination but I enjoy throwing in some silver/blue/white ones or other combinations. I do love your card today!

  22. The traditional red and green are great, but I’ve seen some beautiful cards in purples, navy, silver, gold and white! Sometimes it’s hard to choose, but I tend to go with red and green!

  23. Found tree grains green paper yesterday! Wondered what to complete. Today you embellish it with traditional colors. You are my kind of crafter!
Waiting for rain here so things do not look brown. Keep Looking Up!

  24. I like the traditional red and green, but the colors can vary. Just so they are red or green.

  25. I love the traditional colors, red and green and I consider navy and silver and burgundy to still be traditional, but can’t do pink for Christmas. Solid white is also a great choice with gold.

  26. I love the traditional colors, red and green, but I also like the non traditional colors like pink!

  27. I do make both kinds of cards but I guess I do prefer the traditional colors.

  28. I do make both kinds for Christmas but traditional is my favorite. Your card today is truly my kind of card! Not only is it bright & beautiful but it uses patterned paper!! A win win!!!

  29. I’m a Traditional girl and I Love this card you made with Red and Green,Thanks for the Inspiration!

  30. Lovely card. I make both types but I prefer non traditional colors.
