How to Partial Die Cut

Today for Technique Tuesday, I’d like to show you how to partial die cut using the Country Club Designer Series Paper. This paper is on the Last Chance Products List, and one that I’m highlighting once more before they are gone.

Most of the cards I’ve seen (and made) with this paper are for the guys. But, hey! I know as many women golfers as men, so I thought maybe I should make some cards for my girl golfer friends!

Partial Die Cutting

Use this technique when you want to cut the main part of the design with a circle (or other shape) but there is one part of the design that is much longer than your circle, such as the golf club in this design. Partial die cutting solves the problem and it looks kind of cool, too!

Put your paper and the circle die on your die cutting machine’s plate. Try to center the main object in the design and ignore the golf club for now. I find it easier to have the golf club (or whatever the extending object is) closest to the part of the machine that goes in first. Set your top cutting plate over the die, but don’t cover it completely. Leave it slightly off the part you don’t want to cut. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I took a photo. ~

When you send it through the machine, it will only cut the part that the top plate is covering, so it will not cut out the entire circle. Remove it from the machine and with your scissors, snip out the golf club from the one side of the cut around to the other. This is how it will look when you are done.

On this card, I glued the white circle to the top of the Poppy Parade circle wreath die found in Painted Labels Dies. I put Dimensionals behind it and glued it to the card front.

“Happy Day” comes from Itty Bitty Birthdays and I cropped it with Stitched Rectangle Dies.

  1. Thanks for the reminder about this technique and your very clear instructions and photo. I have so many stamps that this would apply to. Great idea.

Cool, I wasn’t sure what you were talking about. I looked at the club part and still didn’t get it until I read how you did it. Sheesh, I must still be half asleep. Sure made sense then. Fun card.
