Fancy Flora Diagonal Strips

I’ve been pretty obsessed with Fancy Flora DSP lately (could you tell?😄) and thought I would try making one with this pretty pink, blue, and aqua piece today. I’m calling it Fancy Flora Diagonal Strips, because that’s exactly what it is. It looks pretty simple, but actually…. well, let me show you first…

Inspiration Card:

My inspiration was this card below, that I CASEd and modified from Jaimie Babarczy ~

The Challenge:

I really like the look of the split panels without breaking the pattern on the paper. I thought I’d like to try splitting it diagonally, which was a little trickier than the straight horizontal cut. If you first cut the DSP to the size you want, then try to split it diagonally, it throws the pattern off. So here is what I did instead ~

Step by Step Instructions:
  • Start with a 6″x 6″ piece of DSP, such as Fancy Flora, and decide which part of the pattern you want to showcase on your card.
  • Cut a piece of cardstock (Tahitian Tide) to 4-3/4″x 3-1/2″ to back the DSP strips.
  • Cut the 6″x 6″ piece of DSP into 4 diagonal strips and lay them over the backing cardstock, placing the print where you want it to be. The DSP is larger than the backing, so this is the time to adjust the pattern to be where you want it.
  • Adhere each strip to the backing with Dimensionals, leaving about 1/16″ between  strips and carefully adjust the paper to line up the patterns.
  • Turn the panel over and trim off the excess DSP to be the exact same height and width as the backing paper.
  • Next, cut a 5″x 3-3/4″ piece of cardstock (Tahitian Tide) and glue the cardstock-backed DSP panel to it.
  • Cut a card base (Night of Navy) at 11″x 4-1/2″, scored at 5-1/2″. Glue the Tahitian Tide layer to the top of the card base.
Then Finish It Off:
  • Make a label using Basic White Cardstock from All That Dies. Punch a ribbon hole at one end with the Very Best Trio Punch. Stamp a greeting with Night of Navy ink. Add a piece of ribbon such as Fresh Freesia Open Weave Ribbon. Adhere with Dimensionals.
  • Add two In Color Dots to the label.

This pack of paper has many different color combinations in it. You could make several of these with different colors of base and matting and each card would look totally different. You are left with some odd shapes of scraps left over, but one suggestion is cutting 4 corner triangles from the scraps to decorate the inside panel of white.

I hope you’ll try this split panel technique, either diagonal, horizontal, or vertical. It’s a great look, anyway you place the strips. Enjoy playing with the colors!
