Happy Thursday! This week at Create With Connie & Mary, we have a sketch challenge. I saw “square card” in this sketch, so I put a couple of papers from A Walk in the Forest together and created my card.
Here’s the sketch:
And here’s my card:
The photo makes the dark paper look like it’s black, but actually it is Pretty Peacock, which pairs really nicely with Balmy Blue.
I made this card way harder than it needed to be, because instead of a square Peacock mat under the trees, I cut very thin strips and glued them on after I glued the diamond-shaped tree piece. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m going to give you the easier method!
Measurements:
- Pretty Peacock card base, 8-1/2″x 4-1/4″, folded at 4-1/4″ for a square card; 3″x 3″ square for mat; 3-3/4″x 1/4″ for skinny strip
- A Walk in the Forest DSP, 4″x 4″ snowfall print; 4″x 4″ tree print trimmed down to fit
- Basic White 3″x 1″ for label; 4-1/8″x 4-1/8″ for inside
Side Bar:
Did you know? With each purchase of the A Walk in the Forest DSP, Stampin’ Up! will donate $3 to support organizations dedicated to spreading cheer and providing support to those in need!
Steps to Construction:
- On the snowfall square, glue the Pretty Peacock Cardstock on the diagonal, creating a “diamond” shape in the center.
- To cut a diamond-shaped square for the tree piece, I marked the 2″ mid-point on each side and cut from one mark to the next on all four sides. This gives you the square on a diagonal. The finished piece ends up being just a little more than 2-3/4″ on each side.
- Glue the tree piece over the Peacock mat. Trim any excess off the corner tips to line evenly with the snowfall piece.
- Glue the above layers to the card base, oriented with the fold at the top.
- Glue the skinny strip across the front as shown.
- Cut two white banner labels with dies from All That. Stamp the right side banner with “Merry Christmas” from the Cottage Wreaths Stamp Set and Pretty Peacock ink. Cut the left side down to about 1/2″ and glue behind the right side. Attach with Dimensionals. These dies come in two pieces as shown below.
Finishing Touches:
- Add three white Adhesive-Backed Sparkle Gems to the front.
- Decorate a Medium White Envelope with more of the DSP, 6″x 2-1/4″ glued to the flap and trimmed.
On the inside, I stamped the baby bear with Smoky Slate and the Christmas tree with Pretty Peacock. To make it look like the bear is walking in front of the tree, stamp a 2nd bear onto Masking Paper, cut it out, and cover your first stamping of the bear before you stamp the tree. Then peel off the mask and your bear is jauntily walking in front of the tree! (One of my favorite techniques! 🙂 )
Now it’s time to see what the other designers made using this sketch inspiration. Click HERE to go over to Create With Connie & Mary.
Thanks for stopping by today! It’s a new month (October already?!) so I have a new Host Code:

Beautiful card Karen. Where do you find envelopes for a square card?
Thanks, Donna! This is just a regular Medium Envelope from Stampin’ Up! Because my square card is 4-1/4″x 4-1/4″ it fits nicely in the normal envelope.
Eye -catching card, Karen! Beautiful card with other than traditional Christmas colors. That and the square shape sets it apart from “traditional” cards on my mantle!
Thank you Veronica!
Thank you so much. This is a lovely card and will be easy to reproduce with your great instructions.
I’m glad you like it, Ceresa! Thanks so much for your comment!
